Architectural Foundations II
New York City College of Technology, CUNY
Architectural Technology Department
ARCH 1211
Topics to be covered include the methods of preparing architectural massing, study and finished presentation models. The course will include projects such as the construction of a staircase, a noteworthy contemporary house, a building in an urban environment and an interior space.
Project 1: Additive and Subtractive Cubes in a Landscape
The goal of this project is to expose students to working by adding materials together and by subtracting material in order to define volumes and space. Students will be introduced to two new building materials, and will learn how to manipulate contours. Each set of cubes must include one additive design and one subtractive design. The two cubes should have a relationship between each other based on two words defined by the student.
Project 2: Architectural Paleontology, The Architects Model
This project requires the design of an architectural object that identifies a personal interpretation of an existing building and its place in history. An effective architectural process begins with extensive research. Accordingly, the process begins by researching and analyzing the building, its architect, and its moment in time. The goal of this project is to introduce students to research as an integral part of the design process which catalyzes creativity. This research will be communicated through 2-dimensional graphic presentations prepared digitally, and eventually in the crafting of a 3-dimensional model of the existing building.
Project 3: Architectural Screen
In this project students design an architectural screen, which is meant to sit inside of a space (interior or exterior) and create a separation. They are asked to define the space within which the screen should sit, and to design the nature of the separation. For the design of your screen, the architect and house studied in the Architectural Paleontology project should be considered by incorporating the most important design features and ideas that you discovered during study.
