Students study the design of large-scale spaces with an emphasis on planning institutional public and commercial spaces (contract design work). The courses include an exploration of complete solutions to environmental, interior and architectural problems based on space analysis and planning. Coordination of furnishings, materials, user needs and equipment is emphasized.

Project 1: Students will design active and relevant spatial solutions for a vital community library that serves the Clinton Hill and Fort Greene neighborhoods. The library, located on Washington Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, is housed in a modest brick box. Students will re-design its interiors to more directly meet the needs of its patrons in the modern age of information.

Project 2: Branding and corporate identity are now a ubiquitous part of the built environment, requiring special consideration when selecting and developing office space for known companies. Parting from this premise, students will explore the program of an office/workplace to test and substantiate their understanding of “company space”, as it adapts to two different contexts, in two different cities. New York City, with its characteristic high-rise solution will be contrasted with Barcelona, Spain and its opportunities for lower-density, pedestrian level approaches to office space. These contrasting sites will become a laboratory where students will formulate tangible design strategies for deploying a systematic approach to brand as it relates to space. They will be designing for the publishing house Taschen.
